About the Meeting
Pluralism
The International Leon Trotsky Meeting stands for political pluralism: it is neither organized by nor affiliated with any particular party or group. The Organizing Committee of the 5th Meeting is made up of members of the Study and Research Group on Trotsky / Trotskyism and Historiography (GEPTH, Fluminense Federal University) together with independent activists and intellectuals and members of various organizations.
5th International Leon Trotsky Meeting
In 2026 the Leon Trotsky International Meeting reaches its V Edition, which will take place from November 16 to 19 at the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), Maracanã campus. The event has been held since 2019, when its first edition took place in Cuba; the following editions were held in Brazil (São Paulo, 2023), Argentina (2024) and Paraguay (2025). During the pandemic, two editions of the Trótski em Permanência Online Event (2020 and 2021) were also organized from Brazil.
The V Edition will be fully in person, held at UERJ Maracanã. It will feature six Roundtables with invited speakers, always held in Auditorium 91 (9th floor). The event will also include almost 40 accepted papers, distributed across eight Thematic panels, to be held in classrooms that will be announced soon. For those unable to attend in person, the activities will be streamed online on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@EncontroTrotsky. Please also follow us on Instagram and help by sharing the program there: https://www.instagram.com/encontrotrotsky.
The V Edition is organized by the Study and Research Group on Trotsky / Trotskyism and Historiography (GEPTH), which also played a central role in organizing the previous events in Brazil. It is coordinated by Marcio Lauria Monteiro (UFF) and, in addition to GEPTH members, the organizing team includes the Cuban sociologist and historian Frank García Hernández (founder of the Trotsky Meeting) and the historian Osvaldo Coggiola (USP). We also have the support of the Institute of Social Sciences (Instituto de Ciências Sociais) at UERJ.
We invite everyone interested in the political and intellectual legacy of Leon Trotsky and Trotskyism to take part, whether as audience or by presenting papers, regardless of political affiliation or academic ties.
History
The Leon Trotsky International Meetings began in May 2019, with the first event held in La Habana, Cuba, on the initiative of Frank García Hernández, under the name Leon Trotsky International Academic Event. Still during the event in Cuba, the “Mário Pedrosa Organizing Committee” was formed, with the aim of holding a second event, in São Paulo, Brazil, in August 2020. With the covid-19 pandemic, however, the second event was postponed and two online events were held under the name Trotsky in Permanence (Trótski em Permanência), in August 2020 and in August 2021. The II Leon Trotsky International Meeting took place in August 2023, in a hybrid format, in São Paulo, Brazil, and also through online activities. The III edition took place in October 2024, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The IV edition took place in November 2025, in Asunción, Paraguay. The V edition will take place in November 2026, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Organizers of the 5th edition
GEPTH
Grupo de Estudos e Pesquisas sobre Trotsky / Trotskismo e a Historiografia — Universidade Federal Fluminense
The Trotsky Meeting in Brazil (2023 and 2026), as well as the Trótski em Permanência online events (2020 and 2021), relied in their organization on the central role of the Study and Research Group on Trotsky / Trotskyism and Historiography (GEPTH). The 2020, 2021 and 2023 events were organized by the Mário Pedrosa Committee, which included several GEPTH members, whereas the 2026 event is formally organized by the group itself. In addition to GEPTH members, the organizing committee of the V Edition also includes Frank García Hernández (Cuban sociologist and historian, founder of the Trotsky Meeting) and the historian Osvaldo Coggiola (USP, a leading reference on the subject in Brazil).
GEPTH is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Marcio Lauria Monteiro and is affiliated with the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF). The group has formally existed since 2021, but it grew out of an informal network of researchers who had been in contact since 2014. It emerged as a space for developing research on the history of the Trotskyist movement in Brazil and internationally, as well as on the thought of Leon Trotsky. Over time, the group also came to encompass research on a variety of topics based on theoretical and analytical contributions drawn from the work of Trotsky and the Trotskyist movement, such as the history of the Soviet Revolution and of different aspects of the USSR, the history of Brazil, and the history of social revolutions.
The research carried out by GEPTH members has already resulted in numerous papers presented at academic conferences and articles published in national and international scholarly journals. It is currently the only research group in Brazil devoted to the study of Trotsky's thought and political legacy and of the history of Trotskyism, and one of the few worldwide specifically dedicated to this subject.
